Buttermilk Falls State Park for Gorgeous Finger Lakes Scenery

A few weeks ago, I told you of the gorgeous Taughannock Falls Park.  Here you’ll see some gorgeous waterfalls nestled in a gorgeous area next to Cayuga Lake.  However I would be remiss to not tell you about another gorgeous nature-and-falls area…

On the south end of Cayuga Lake (just southwest of Ithaca) is Buttermilk Falls State Park, just a 20 minute (13-mile) drive from The Inn at Gothic Eves.  Here, Buttermilk Creek flows through the park, tumbling down 10 total falls and 500 feet along its path. Sheer drops, multi-drops, and cascades… you’ll see just about every type of falls within this park!

Hiking trails meander through the wooded land, along the gorge, and through the Larch Meadows wetland area.  Nearly 4.5 total miles of trail let you take in all of the area’s beauty.  Want to see as many of the falls as possible?  Follow the .75 mile Gorge Trail, and be sure it hasn’t been dry for long when you go, else the falls may be on the dry side.  On the other side of the gorge, the Rim Trail leads you .75 miles back to your starting point, and gives alternative views of many falls.

The main Buttermilk Falls are the primary attraction.  Cascading down a gorgeous stair step of rock, Buttermilk Falls ends in a pool that is open for swimming during summer months.  The feel is that of an old swimming hole, making it a favorite for visitors of all ages.  Want to stay dry but enjoy the ambiance of the falls?  Relax on the swimming beach, one of the benches, or bring a blanket or towel for the grass beside the swimming area.  Feeling a little daring?  Dangle your feet in the water from the steps beside the swimming area.  Of course, the option is always there to jump right in and experience the crisp waters of Buttermilk Creek during summer season!

Park is open all year, but trails close in November and reopen in May.  There is a $7 vehicle entry fee to visit.

If you’re looking for a relaxing way to spend a day of your Finger Lakes bed and breakfast getaway, consider Buttermilk Falls State Park for a dose of nature in all her beauty!
