If you’ve ever visited Upstate New York, you have some idea of our rich cultural livelihood. This area boasts wine, nature, boating, antiques, and some great cooperative growing with the corresponding farmer’s markets. But that’s not all. The Finger Lakes region is home to some of the most creative people in the United States! Local artists thrive in this area, creating some of the most beautiful works to be found.
Artists markets are popular events throughout the United States. Usually, this means tracking down individual events where your favorite artists are setting up, trusting that there will be new and interesting creative pieces that will capture your interest there as well. However, it is SO much easier than that here! The Greater Ithaca Art Trail keeps the area artists in their own studio locations, easy for all to find. While the Art Trail is available year-round by appointment, the group takes two weekends per year to open up all the artists’ studios, available to anyone and everyone. And you don’t have to worry about calling first! Join us this fall on October 6-7 and 13-14, 2012 for the Greater Ithaca Art Trail Open Studio Event.
Featuring 47 artists in 46 studios, the Trail itself literally has something for every kind of art-lover there is: paintings, photography, fiber art, carvings, prints, ceramics, metal, furniture, jewelers, glass, and other 3-D art. The Trail is a self-guided tour throughout the county taking you from Trumansburg down to Ithaca proper to witness art and demonstrations in the relaxed environment of the artists’ own studios.
Four of the artists’ studios are right here in Trumansburg, meaning that you can wander through town after your fresh, healthy inn breakfast. After that, you can make it a day of art as you begin your drive southeast towards Ithaca. Enjoy the beautiful fall colors as you make your way towards the three studios off of Route 96. From there, you can head to downtown Ithaca, where there is a large concentration of artist studios. From downtown, you can easily spiral outwards to the locations around the town’s perimeter, making it easy to find those perfect pieces for your home, or for gifts.
On Sunday, drive from Trumansburg southwest towards Mecklenburg on Route 227-228 to the artists there, and swing over towards Seneca Lake and the studio in Lodi. Make sure to visit one or two of the award-winning wineries in the area to make your day complete.
Want to tailor your art tour? Maps and Artist Bios with a sample photo of their work are available online. Find those artists whose work you adore, and map out your own route to your favorites! That way you can tailor your search for that new painting for above the fireplace, the perfect gift fitting that special someone, or those artists whose works simply catch your eye.
The studios are open from 11:00am to 5:00pm each weekend day of both weekends. If you have to miss the Open Studio Event, you can certainly visit the artists throughout the year with just a phone-call appointment.
It is not too late to plan your Cayuga Lake B&B getaway to discover the beauty and creativity of area artists during this once-a-year open house. Reserve your favorite guestroom here at the friendliest Inn in Trumansburg, and discover all the creativity and talent this region’s artists have to offer!
