One of the top attractions in the Finger Lakes Region is the stunning Taughannock Falls State Park. Of course, the biggest draw to this park is its namesake feature—Taughannock Falls—which is a sight to behold. The breathtaking 400-foot tall limestone bluffs encompass the falls as the water plunges 215 feet over the cliffs to the gorge below. Arguably, Autumn is the most beautiful season to visit Taughannock Falls State Park, but there’s a lot to do here all year round, including hiking, kayaking, fishing, standup paddleboarding, swimming, and picnicking along the shores of Cayuga Lake, and much more.
Thankfully, as a guest at our Finger Lakes Bed and Breakfast, you’ll be a two-minute car ride to the parking area at the park. We always suggest that our overnight guests include a least a trip to the overlook to take in the tallest waterfall in New York State. At our B&B, you’ll experience the most luxurious accommodations, welcoming hospitality, and lovely breakfasts each morning of your stay. It will truly be an unforgettable getaway to Upstate NY when you book your room at Inn at Gothic Eves.
Fall is a popular time to visit the Finger Lakes, so be sure to get your lodging on the books today!
Explore the Beauty at Taughannock Falls State Park
There’s no doubt that the towering drop of Taughannock Falls is an awe-inspiring natural wonder. From a distance, you’ll marvel at the beauty of the tallest free-falling waterfall east of the Mississippi, and though it might have less volume than Niagara Falls, it’s noticeably taller. There are hiking trails to both the gorge below and the rim above, allowing you to enjoy this powerful beauty from a variety of angles.
The Gorge Trail at Taughannock Falls State Park is under a mile and will lead you into the gorge towards the falls. It’s an easy hike, but the rocks can sometimes be slippery, so exercise plenty of caution and stay on the trail. Enjoy capturing a picture-perfect angle of the falls from this viewpoint. On the top, you’ll find the north and south rim trails, which can connect to make a loop. They are considered moderate, cover approximately 2.75 miles total, and offer great views of the waterfalls and gorge below.
All Seasons at Taughannock Falls State Park
- Warmer Month Activities: Though the waterfall is clearly the main attraction in this park, it’s not the only reason to visit! Taughannock Falls State Park is located on Cayuga Lake and has great places for fishing, boating, swimming, and paddleboarding. There’s a monitored swimming area off South Point, offering the perfect way to cool off on a hot day. They even offer kayak or canoe rentals for use on the lake. The Summer Concert Series is a seasonal highlight. Not only is this concert venue one of the most beautiful around, but the music is truly delightful.
- Cold Weather Experiences: Parts of Taughannock Falls State Park will be closed in the snowy winter months, but the falls are still worth viewing in this season. The mammoth cliffs resemble an icy cathedral as the misty waters freeze along the stone. Be sure to check the weather conditions before heading out.
