Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge, located in the Finger Lakes region of Upstate New York, is a premier destination for birdwatching and hiking enthusiasts. Spanning over 10,000 acres, this refuge is a critical habitat for a diverse array of bird species, making it a popular destination for ornithologists and nature lovers. During migration seasons, visitors can witness an impressive array of waterfowl, songbirds, and raptors, including bald eagles, making it one of the best birdwatching spots in the Northeast.
There are several ways to explore this preserve: by car, on foot, or from the water. Kayaking at Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge is an unforgettable experience. Here are the top five things to do at Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge:
- Birdwatching & Wildlife Viewing: Observe various bird species, particularly during migration seasons. The best time to view wildlife is dawn to mid-morning or late afternoon to dark. Fall and Spring welcome migratory birds, whereas summer is nesting season. Waterfowl, heron, egrets, eagles, osprey, northern harriers, terns, shorebirds, and more are all possible species you can spot!
- Hiking the Scenic Trails: The refuge offers several well-maintained trails with varying difficulty levels, catering to both casual and avid hikers. These trails meander through wetlands, forests, and grasslands.
- Follow Wildlife Drive: Montezuma has a three-mile, one-way Wildlife Drive that traverses the edge of the refuge’s Main Pool and ends at route NY-89. You can pull over for viewing at any time, but the park asks that you remain in your vehicle for the duration of the route.
- Hop in Your Kayak: Paddle through the waterways adjacent to the refuge for a unique perspective on the habitat and wildlife.
- Take Beautiful Photos: Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge offers many great photo ops. Be sure to snap a few shots to update your Instagram story.
Head to one of the Best Finger Lakes Wineries after Birdwatching:
Along the 40-minute scenic drive from our B&B to the refuge, you’ll pass by many lovely wineries in the Finger Lakes region. However, one of our favorites is Sheldrake Point Winery, which is approximately halfway along your route. This award-winning winery sits on the shores of Cayuga Lake with sweeping water views and vines leading down to the water. Their portfolio ranges from dry, classic, and reserve wines to our scrumptious late-harvest and ice wines. And they have delicious snacks and cheese pairings.
