Get Outside at these Finger Lakes State Parks

One of the big draws to Upstate New York in the Finger Lakes region is the stunning countryside. Many people who live in the city stand in awe at the rolling emerald hills, lush forests, prairies, and gorges overlooking rushing waterfalls and streams. You almost have to see it with your own eyes to fully grasp the scope and beauty of this area.

Our bed and breakfast in Trumansburg, NY, is a great place to make your homebase as you head out to explore the nearby Finger Lakes State Parks. Here’s a handful not to miss for hikes, bike rides, and soaking up the pristine nature of this region:

  1. Taughannock Falls State Park: This state park is so close to our Finger Lakes Bed and Breakfast that it almost feels like it’s in our backyard. This is a huge draw, considering that Taughannock Falls is a 215-foot waterfall that welcomes thousands of visitors from all over the country. Additionally, there are fantastic hiking trails, swimming beaches, boat rentals, and opportunities for nature viewing.
  2. Finger Lakes National Forest: Any national forest is a hiker’s paradise, and this beautiful swath of trees offers more than 900 miles of maintained trails, including segments of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail. It’s a lovely space for birdwatching and hunting for native plant species.
  3. Watkins Glen State Park: Possibly the most famous of the Finger Lakes State Parks due to the extensive collection of waterfalls: 19 to be exact. Trails wind under and around, cascading water from unique rock formations with caves and natural bridges. Watkins Glen is about a half hour from our Inn, but the drive is particularly scenic, and you might even consider stopping off at a winery or two on your way back.
  4. Robert H. Treman State Park: The highlight of this state park is Enfield Glen, a deep, narrow gorge surrounding Enfield Creek. Along the trails, you’ll find 12 brilliant waterfalls and even a swimming area flanked by cascading falls—a popular spot in the summer to cool off. However, there are no lifeguards, so swim at your own risk.
  5. Sampson State Park: Located on the Eastern Shore of Seneca Lake, this state park is situated right on the waterfront. Most visitors to this 2,000-acre park spend the day on the water, kayaking, canoeing, or boating. The sandy beach area is a great spot to relax and take a dip in the fresh, clean lake.
