The Breathtaking Beauty of Taughannock Falls State Park

One of the top attractions in the Finger Lakes Region is the stunning Taughannock Falls State Park. Of course, the biggest draw to this park is its namesake feature, Taughannock Falls, which is a sight to behold. The breathtaking 400-foot-tall limestone bluffs surround the falls, where the water plunges 215 feet over the cliffs into the gorge below. Arguably, autumn is the most beautiful season to visit Taughannock Falls State Park, but there’s a lot to do here all year round, including hiking, kayaking, fishing, standup paddleboarding, swimming, and picnicking along the shores of Cayuga Lake, and much more.

While Taughannock Falls State Park is undoubtedly one of the most popular things to do in the Finger Lakes, the surrounding region offers an incredible array of experiences that make it one of New York’s most beloved destinations. If you’re a waterfall lover, you’re in luck. The Finger Lakes region is home to some of the most spectacular waterfalls in New York, and Taughannock Falls is just one of the many cascades worth exploring. From dramatic gorge falls to hidden woodland cascades, we are located a short drive from the best Finger Lakes waterfalls.

Spending an afternoon tasting at world-renowned Finger Lakes wineries along one of the scenic wine trails is an absolute must. Out of the water, boating and sailing on the glacially carved lakes provide a breathtaking perspective of the rolling hills and vineyards that frame the shoreline. Beyond the outdoor adventures, the region is dotted with charming small towns like Trumansburg, Watkins Glen, and Seneca Falls, where you can browse boutique shops, dine at farm-to-table restaurants, or wander through farmers’ markets.

As a guest at our Finger Lakes Bed and Breakfast, you’ll be a two-minute car ride to the parking area at the park. We always suggest that our overnight guests include at least a trip to the Taughannock Falls overlook to take in the tallest waterfall in New York State. Explore the Beauty at Taughannock Falls State Park

There’s no doubt that the towering drop of Taughannock Falls is an awe-inspiring natural wonder. From a distance, you’ll marvel at the beauty of this stunning Finger Lakes waterfall, the tallest free-falling waterfall east of the Mississippi. Though it might have less volume than Niagara Falls, it’s noticeably taller. The Taughannock Falls State Park trails lead to both the gorge below and the rim above, allowing you to enjoy this powerful beauty from a variety of angles.

The Gorge Trail at Taughannock Falls State Park is under a mile and will lead you into the gorge towards the falls. It’s an easy hike, but the rocks can be slippery, so exercise caution and stay on the trail. Enjoy capturing a picture-perfect angle of the falls from this viewpoint. At the top, you’ll find the north and south rim trails, which can be connected to form a loop. They are considered moderate, cover approximately 2.75 miles total, and offer great views of the waterfalls in New York’s most scenic gorge below.

Though the waterfall is the main attraction at Taughannock Falls State Park, and one of the most spectacular Finger Lakes waterfalls you’ll find, it’s not the only reason to visit! The park is located on Cayuga Lake and offers great fishing, boating, swimming, and paddleboarding. There’s a monitored swimming area off South Point, offering the perfect way to cool off on a hot day. Renting a kayak or canoe is one of the best things to do in the Finger Lakes in the summer.

Parts of Taughannock Falls State Park will be closed in the snowy winter months, but the falls are still worth viewing. The mammoth cliffs resemble an icy cathedral as the misty waters freeze along the stone, a uniquely magical experience for those hiking upstate NY in the colder months. Be sure to check the weather conditions before heading out.
