Beautiful Hikes on the Watkins Glen Gorge Trail & More Waterfalls
Watkins Glen Gorge Trail exists because glaciers carved deep valleys through the Finger Lakes region during the last Ice Age, about 10,000-12,00 years ago. As the glaciers melted, rushing streams cut into the land, creating steep cliffs, winding passageways, and dramatic drop-offs. Over time, the water continued to erode the rock, which is why the gorge is full of natural stone steps, sheer walls, and narrow twists that feel almost otherworldly.
The reason there are so many waterfalls in the Finger Lakes is tied to the same geology. The lakes themselves are long, deep troughs carved by glaciers, and the streams that flow toward them drop sharply down the rocky cliffs. These steep gradients create perfect conditions for waterfalls, big and small. That’s why the region is home to famous cascades like Taughannock Falls and the 19 waterfalls along the Watkins Glen Gorge Trail, all packed into a relatively small area.
The Watkins Glen Gorge Trail is open seasonally, typically from mid-May to late October, and is closed in winter due to icy conditions. The north and south rim nature trails are open all year, from sunrise to sunset. While you don’t need Watkins Glen State Park tickets to secure entry, there is a $10 parking fee for those arriving by car.
With 800 stone steps, dramatic rock formations, and water rushing around every corner, the Watkins Glen Gorge Trail is a hike you’ll never forget. The path can be strenuous for some visitors, but a weekend shuttle runs between the entrances, allowing visitors to hike one way for a more manageable experience.
As of July 2025, the main tunnel entrance and Sentry Bridge at the start of the Watkins Glen Gorge Trail will be closed for construction. The South Rim Trail will be closed at the main entrance, but remains accessible from other entry points. The Gorge Trail is still accessible via the North Rim Trail from the Main, South, or North entrances during the open season. Full reopening is expected for summer 2026.
